Choosing a test

Consider more than the topic a test measures. Review its intended use, target population, administration, interpretation and quality. In professional diagnostics, selection and interpretation belong with an appropriately qualified professional.

Responsible professional use

Start with the question you need to answer. Assess whether the target population, norms, administration conditions and interpretation are appropriate. A score only becomes meaningful in context and should not be separated from professional expertise.

Testing, screening and diagnosis

These terms are not interchangeable. A test may contribute to screening or diagnosis, but a single instrument does not automatically establish a diagnosis. Decisions affecting a person's care require careful professional interpretation.
